LCNTDR publishes special issue highlighting challenges and opportunities for NTDs
The London Centre for Neglected Tropical Disease Research (LCNTDR) has guest edited a special issue published in The Royal Society Philosophical Transactions B journal titled "Challenges and opportunities in the fight against neglected tropical diseases: a decade from the London Declaration on NTDs".
The issue celebrates progress made since the first World Health Organization road map for NTDs and the 2012 London Declaration on NTDs and highlights challenges and opportunities to achieve targets set in the second global road map for NTDs (2021-2030). In particular, the issue highlights opportunities to advance towards the road maps paradigm shifts: (i) accelerating programmatic action; (ii) intensifying cross-cutting approaches, and (iii) facilitating country ownership.
The issue includes a range of contributions presenting new research for NTDs that require intensified disease management and NTDs that are amendable to preventive chemotherapy.
Notably, articles within the issue highlight the need to improve impact survey design, evaluate new diagnostics, understand the consequences of heterogeneous disease prevalence and human movement, the potential impact of alternative treatment strategies and the importance of zoonotic transmission.
