Julian Eaton
Julian Eaton is Mental Health Director for CBM International, and Co-Director of the Centre for Global Mental Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Trained as a psychiatrist, his work involves promoting greater access to health care services, and social inclusion, focused mainly on poor and marginalised communities. CBM’s work is focused in social inclusion of people with disabilities, and he leads a team providing technical support for programmes around the world, including in emergency settings. This includes mental health focused work, and intersections of mental health and wellbeing with other areas of health and development, including NTDs.
Julian is based at LSHTM, and has published on mental health services in low income countries, global mental health, and human rights. He is principle investigator of the Mental Health Innovations Network, and SUCCEED, a programme investigating care and support for people with severe mental illness in poor settings in Africa. He was founding convener of the NTD NGO Network’s (NNN) Mental Wellbeing and Stigma Working Group, and worked closely with WHO to produce a brochure and manual on mental health and NTDs (in press). He was a member of the Lancet Commission on Global Mental Health and Sustainable Development, and contributes in an advisory capacity to the WHO’s mental health work, especially in Africa.
Julian recently returned to London, after 15 happy years living and working in West Africa, initially in Nigeria, and more recently in Togo.
